IOCL R & D, Faridabad

On 1st April 2019 (12.00 Noon to 2.00 pm ) , a visit was planned with IOCL R & D, Faridabad engine testing laboratory. The following participants from the Department of Mechanical engineering have attended the visit.
1. Mr. Shivam Teotia (B.Tech (ME 4th Yr. student) GLBITM
2. Mr. V. K. Yadav (Associate Professor) GLBITM
3. Mr. Ashish singh (Asstt. Professor) GLBITM

The engine testing laboratory is highly equipped by the latest testing tools and devices like FTIR, Coolant controlling unit, Engine exhaust particle sizer, eddy current dynamometer, etc. These devices are needed to fully analyse and generate accurate experiment result. This test laboratory has its expertise in combustion emission testing using FTIR device. The device FTIR is used to measure the quantity of exhaust gas particles like etc. as per international standard norms.

The engine tested over there is 6 cylinder turbocharged engines fitted with Multi Point Fuel Injection system along with water inter-cooler. Intercoolers maintain engine’s temperature during experiment. The exhaust gases are passed through the catalytic converter to reduce the exhaust emissions (Palladium is used as catalyst). After combustion, the exhaust gases are passed through gas filters followed by Engine Exhaust Particle Sizer which is used to detect the size of exhaust gas particle (up to 350 nm). The set-up has water jacket which is used to cool down the engine during experimentation. The engine is controlled through Electronic Control Unit or Electronic Monitoring Unit (i.e., ECU/EMU).
