Workshop on Outcome-Based Learning

On September 13, 2023, the Department of Applied Computational Science and Engineering hosted an enlightening workshop on "Outcome-Based Learning and CO/PO Mapping." The workshop, conducted by Dr. Jay Singh, a distinguished academic and expert in the field, aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills required for calculating Course Outcomes (CO) and Program Outcomes (PO) mapping in the context of outcome-based education.
Workshop Overview:
Session 1: Understanding Outcome-Based Learning
Dr. Jay Singh, an accomplished educator with a rich background in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, began the workshop by providing a comprehensive understanding of outcomebased learning. He emphasized the importance of aligning educational objectives with the desired learning outcomes and the significance of this approach in modern education.
Session 2: Course Outcomes (CO) Development
In the second session, Dr. Singh guided participants through the process of developing Course Outcomes (CO). Using practical examples and templates, he demonstrated how COs should be specific, measurable, and directly related to what students are expected to learn in a particular course.
Session 3: Program Outcomes (PO) Framework
The workshop's third session focused on the development of Program Outcomes (PO). Dr. Singh explained that POs are broader goals that encompass multiple courses within a program. Greater Noida GL Bajaj Institute of Technology & Management [Approved by AICTE, Govt. of India & Affiliated to Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow, U.P., India] Department of Applied Computational Science & Engineering He emphasized the need to align POs with the department's mission and accreditation requirements, highlighting the role of POs in shaping an effective curriculum.
Session 4: CO/PO Mapping
The heart of the workshop was the session on CO/PO mapping. Dr. Singh skillfully guided participants through the process of mapping COs to POs, ensuring that program objectives are met through the curriculum. This mapping is instrumental in assessing program effectiveness and making informed improvements.
Practical Exercises
Throughout the workshop, participants actively engaged in practical exercises. These exercises allowed attendees to create COs for specific courses and map them to relevant POs, providing hands-on experience in the critical task of aligning course and program objectives.
Q&A Session
The workshop concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where participants had the opportunity to seek clarification on various aspects of outcome-based learning and CO/PO mapping. Dr. Jay Singh's extensive knowledge and experience in the field made this session particularly insightful.
Closing Remarks
Dr. Jay Singh, a renowned educator and thought leader, expressed his gratitude to the participants for their enthusiastic engagement in the workshop. He encouraged them to implement outcome-based learning and CO/PO mapping in their respective departments, highlighting the role of these practices in enhancing the quality of education and keeping programs relevant to industry needs.
