Expert lecture on Microfluidics and Micropatterning

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, GL Bajaj Institute of Technology and Management, Greater Noida, organized an expert lecture on “Microfluidics and Micropatterning” on 27 August 2022 (11:00 AM to 12:30 PM). The expert of this lecture was Dr. Subhra Datta (Associate Professor, IIT Delhi). The session was started with warm welcome by Dr. Vinod Kumar Yadav (HOD-ME). Dr. Shubhra Datta explained the physical and chemical features of a surface contacting a flowing fluid that may be altered and patterned in various ways to create technologically significant effects in microfluidic devices that can reduce friction, better mix chemical species, and even separate mixtures. Dr. Datta also discussed the fluid dynamic consequences of surface micropatterns in electrically and mechanically driven microfluidic systems. He briefed about the surface features like non-planar topography, fluid slippage, super hydrophobicity, and surface charge gradient. He showed the relevancy of simple and preferably closed-form effective equations connecting macroscopically accessible variables like flow and pressure through analyses of the fluid down to the scale of individual surface features. Numerical and experimental assessments of the analytical findings were also presented by the expert. The session ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Vinod Kumar Yadav (HOD-ME).
